YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 7, 2017

One recent morning I went out early.  As it was a bit colder than it has been, I grabbed a coat I had not worn all season. Have you ever reached into a pocket of a garment you have not worn in a long while and found a pleasant surprise?  Most of us have.  I love it when I find money.  Once I found forty dollars that had been in a coat pocket for months. Yesterday, I did not find money, but I found something more precious. In that coat were three small, folded valentine cards.  They were from children at church who had given them to me last year on Valentines Day. I thought of each child. I remember when they gave them to me. They wanted me to know they loved me. After they had given them to me, I put them in my coat pocket and never thought of them again, until today. What a treat it was for me to discover them and remember those children.

Finding those valentines reminds me of the Apostle Paul and the many letters he wrote to the churches he helped establish and to his special friends that ministered alongside him and even spent time in prison with him.  To the church at Philippi, he delivers a beautiful salutation; “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:3-6). The people of Philippi must have read the letter over and over again. His words must have made them feel warm and fuzzy and gave them encouragement to carry on. We are encouraged to this day by his writings to those churches.

We have all received letters, cards or even valentines that we read over and over.  What occurs to me after reading my valentines yesterday and thinking of Paul writing encouraging letters that have been blessings for centuries, is that the written word is incredibly powerful. Many people journal daily and what a treasure that will be to leave for loved ones to enjoy in the future.  My mother-in-law journaled and left her journals to my daughter.  My daughter cherishes them. Generations to follow can learn much from us.

I am not sure how I got from finding three valentines in an old coat to this point, but the challenge is to write something frequently, perhaps daily, to leave your loved ones.  May it be words of encouragement and love and wisdom. We may never know how it touches someone’s life, long after we are gone.
