YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 10, 2018

Do you ever remember doing something as a small child that your parents expressly told you not to do?  Most of us have.  That activity was likely forbidden because your parents thought it would be for your own good to not participate.

I remember when I was about five years old, my parents told me to never jump on their bed. Somehow, even at five, their ban must have made it more attractive.  I loved jumping on their bed. It was my trampoline.  One day as I was jumping as high as I could, I lost my balance and fell, landing hard on the nightstand. I remember that it hurt but there was no outward sign of injury.  After several days of crying and complaining my parents took me to the doctor.  I had a simple fracture of my collar bone. Even worse than the pain, was the treatment.  A small cross was placed on my back and my shoulders pulled back and secured to the cross to stabilize the bone as it healed. It was summer and my mother took my brother, sister and I swimming every day at a local state park which had a very nice lake and beach. I loved to swim.  For six weeks I had to sit on the beach and watch the other kids have all the fun, while I bore my cross.  I don’t ever remember jumping on my parent’s bed again.

I suspect disobeying your parents is about as close to sin as a small child gets.  Disobedience definitely had its consequences.  So it is with disobeying God. The worst consequence is death. “For the wages of sin is death.” However, the last part of that verse, Romans 6:23, makes it clear God has provided a plan to deliver us from death; “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

There was no escaping my punishment for disobeying my parents.  They did the right thing, but I still had to “bear my cross.”  God knew we would disobey Him and He knew we would face the worst consequence ever; death (separation from Him ). What most non-Christians don’t understand is that God does not cause the separation; sin does. My parents did not cause my accident, my disobedience did.  God provides the escape from eternal damnation. “But God demonstrates His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8.) It doesn’t get any better than that.
