YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 12, 2018

In 2017, history was made in the world of college football.  The Clemson Tigers defeated the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide for the National Collegiate Football Championship.  Why is it college football history? Most everyone is aware of the Tide’s prowess on the football field. They have won more national titles than any other team and were favored to win the title game. It has only been in recent years that the National title has been decided by one final game, but that is a discussion for another time.  The fascinating fact that will go down in college football history is that this game marked the first time in 40,619 days since Clemson defeated Alabama on the football field.  It last happened in 1905. The two teams have only met 13 times since 1905 but, this is a game Clemson wanted badly since they lost to the Tide last year in the title match-up.  I don’t tell you all this because I want you to think I am an expert on college football trivia.  I am not.  These were fascinating facts that came out over the course of the game.

What does all this have to do with today’s devotion? Think about the frustration the Tigers have had trying to beat the Tide.  If you watched the game, you know they did not give up.  As a matter of fact, Clemson did not get the winning points until the last second of the contest. Yes, that’s right; there was one second left on the game clock. What a lesson in perseverance!

We read throughout the Bible that we are to never give up hope. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”  (2 Corinthians 4:16-17 ). The trophy the Tigers received for winning that game will forever be on display at Clemson University.  It represents the glory they achieved for persevering.

If you have been struggling through trial after trial and there appears to be no end, remember you are achieving eternal glory if you persevere, keep your eyes on the goal, do not lose heart, do not give up hope, and keep the faith. The Apostle Paul knew this.  He wrote to his friend Timothy, “Now there is in-store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.” (2 Timothy 4:8). Not one of us has struggled more than Paul. His perseverance achieved for Paul eternal glory. He did not give up and he did not lose heart.
