ARE YOU SLEEP WALKING PAST THE NEEDS OF OTHERS

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 9, 2018

A few days ago something reminded me of my daughter when she was about ten years old. She was a notorious sleepwalker.  One night, she got out of bed, took a shower and washed her hair.  She wrapped herself in a towel and then came to my room, woke me and stood there, dripping wet, talking nonsensically for several minutes. She then wandered back to bed without ever waking.

As I thought about that incident, I laughed.  Quickly, my laughter turned to more serious thought as I realized how many of us, myself included, sleepwalk through life totally oblivious to the needs around us.

This is a common theme in my devotions, so at the risk of being redundant or of “beating a dead horse,” I broach the subject again. As I said, I am guilty of sleepwalking past the needs of others.  I don’t do that deliberately, but the result is the same, deliberate or not. The point is, I must consciously, as an act of my will do what God has called me to do.  When I am in a position to minister or serve, I must do it.  There are many ways I can be pro-active.  I do not have to wait for a need to knock on my door.  I can open my church bulletin and look at the list of shut-ins.  Many of those people have no one to call them or visit them.  There is no reason I should sleepwalk past that need. There is a hospital less than one-half mile from my home.  Again, there is another opportunity for me to share the love of Christ.

I know people who spend their lives serving others.  They don’t sleepwalk, but I am certain they sleep well.

Resolve with me today to consciously reach out to those in need.
