MARCHING INTO HELL FOR A HEAVENLY CAUSE

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day.
February 21, 2017

I usually have music playing in my home throughout the day. Yesterday, my music of choice was Broadway songs. One song that I have always loved is, “The Impossible Dream,” from the hit show,”Man of La Mancha.”) I know that over my lifetime I have either listened to, played, or sung that powerful selection hundreds of times. Yesterday, as it was playing, one phrase stood out in a way I had never thought of before. The show and the music are not written in a Christian context, but I heard them as though they were.  As the lyrics develop the theme, they explain how one might achieve an impossible dream. The one phrase that grabbed me was, “to be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause.”  When I heard those words, the Spirit leaped in me.  I instantly thought, “that’s what Jesus did!”  Jesus marched into hell to achieve the heavenly cause of salvation.  Some theologians believe Jesus literally spent the time between His crucifixion and resurrection, in hell.  The Apostles Creed states that he descended to hell. Several verses of scripture support that belief, however, it is unclear and open to interpretation if He spent that time, literally, in hell. If it was not a literal hell, His suffering on the cross was a figurative hell. He achieved “the impossible.” I can’t comprehend that kind of commitment to a cause so that your sins and mine might be redeemed.

In America, we are sheltered and protected from religious persecution. There are, however, Christians around the world who are suffering their kind of hell to advance the Kingdom of God on earth.

Today, let’s thank God that Jesus marched into hell for our salvation . and pray for those who suffer persecution for the cause of the Gospel of Christ.

FOR ME TO LIVE OR DIE IS CHIRST

YOUR DAILY MOMENT; inspirational thoughts to begin your day.
February 20,2018

Most Christians are familiar with Corrie Ten Boom.  She was the only member of her family to survive the Nazi concentration camp in which they were placed. That is a story for you to read. ( The link here is to only one of many of the great books she wrote. As you follow this link it will take you to other books by Corrie Ten Boom ) Corrie, in relating the horrors of the holocaust, became one of the most powerful voices for Christ in the twentieth century.

In my Sunday School class on Sunday, while studying a passage in Philippians 4, our teacher spoke of a quote by Corrie Ten Boom. “Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow. It empties today or its strength.”
I suppose if anyone had reason to worry, it was Corrie.  Seeing the unimaginable atrocities of the death camps would be beyond what most of us Christians (who know not what it is to be persecuted for our faith ) could conceive. However, Corrie stood on her faith in Christ. I can imagine her saying, just as the Apostle Paul said, “for to me to live is Christ and to die is gain,” (Philippians 1:21). There was no need to worry. Whether in life or in death nothing could ever happen to her that would separate her from Christ.

Most of us spend far to much time worrying and it saps us of our strength, and our ability to think clearly. Resolve today to live in the moment knowing nothing can ever happen today or tomorrow that will remove us from His hand.

WHAT DAY WERE YOU BORN?

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 19, 2017

Last night my husband and I, with some friends, had an early birthday celebration for another friend. The lovely lady for whom we had the party is a very young eighty-three.  Until she was fifty-nine years old she had never seen a birth certificate and had always believed her date of birth to be February 23.  The family bible had the 23rd recorded as the day she was born and back then you believed what was written in the family history section of the bible. Upon receiving the official document she learned her birthday was February 24. From that time on she had two birthdays; one on the 23rd and one on the 24th.  She and her family always celebrated the date that her mother inscribed in the Bible.  Eighty-three years ago, especially in rural areas, it was not unusual for a country doctor to travel the county for a week, deliver a half dozen babies and try to remember what date each was born when the time came for him to complete the certificate. My friend believes the doctor was wrong. However, officially and legally her date of birth is February 24.

I tell you all this for two reasons.  First of all, in the grand scheme of things, it is not important to know the exact time, place or date. The story does remind me that what is important is that God knew what day it would be before she was ever born.  From the beginning of time, God not only knew the date but how many hairs, if any, would be on her head.  He made her and designed every part of her being; physical, emotional and spiritual. From the beginning of time, He loved her. She was “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Psalm 139:13.

The second reason for telling you the story is that it is completely unimportant to know much, if anything, about your physical birth. You see, my friend would go on to have yet, another birthday; the day she was born into the family of God. On that day her name was not written in the family Bible but in the Lambs book of life.  When she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior she was born again.  That day will be the only one that matters in eternity.

Today, celebrate your spiritual birth. Thank God for sending Jesus so that we all might be born again if we believe in Him and accept the gift of salvation.

MULTIPLY LOVE BY GIVING IT AWAY

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 18, 2017

I was thinking today of the story of Jesus feeding the multitudes with a few fish and loaves of bread. Jesus had just learned about the death of John the Baptist and withdrew to a secluded place on a boat. However, crowds were following Him and the Scripture says He had compassion on them and went ashore and began to heal them. When evening approached He was concerned that they would be hungry. He ordered His disciples to gather what little food the crowd had, and He took two fish and five loaves of bread, blessed it and had the disciples feed the crowd. When they were finished, they collected more loaves and more fish than they had when they started.

We all the know the story. This is one of the many miracles Jesus performed. This was a case where giving the food away, actually multiplied it. It occurred to me that the thoughts preceding the miracle were those of love. Was Jesus trying to show the multitudes that love is the only commodity we can give away and have it multiplied?

I have never heard that connection made but it is interesting. Love is often reciprocal; the more we give the more we get. However, as in the feeding of the five thousand, the more we love, the more love multiplies.

Today, multiply some love by giving it away.

THE CHRISTIAN’S ULTIMATE PRIVILEGE

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 17, 2017

I am re-reading a book that I last read about thirty years ago; Life’s Ultimate Privilege,  by Devern Fromke. Over the years I could never remember anything in the book except what the author believes that privilege to be. I happen to agree with him. As Christians, our ultimate privilege is that we are allowed to fellowship with the God of the universe.
Wow, that is so awesome! In a world of over seven billion people, there is no one we could befriend or be more privileged to know, than our God.

One of my favorite Christian songs is, “In The Presence of Jehovah,” by Geron Davis.  He is God Almighty and Prince of Peace. The song says that in His presence, “troubles vanish, hearts are mended.”  When we fellowship with God, we don’t go to Him with a wish list. I, however, have always thought that because he is the perfect host, He would never allow us to leave His presence without meeting our needs.

Today, take advantage of your ultimate privilege to fellowship with the God of the Universe.

IT’S ABOUT HOW WE MAKE OTHERS FEEL

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 16, 2017

I read a quote today by the late American poet laureate, Maya Angelou. She said, “People will forget what you said, and people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” As I was pondering those words, an example came to mind.

Many years ago I had to have a root canal. Much was going on in my life at that time. Several months earlier I had been diagnosed with cancer, had surgery and was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. I was handling it all very well, but that is a story for another day.  The doctor had already propped my mouth open with those rubber gadgets they use (the worst part of any dental procedure) and had started to work.  At that moment all the emotion, the pain, and the disruption to my life of the prior weeks and months came crashing down upon me. With the doctor working in my mouth, I could not speak, but I began to cry. The doctor was unaware of what going on in my life, but he was sensitive and caring enough to know he had to stop what he had started.  When my mouth was free, and I could speak, through tears I explained that I was going through a difficult time and everything had just caught up with me. I don’t remember anything he said. I don’t know what he did to wrap up the unfinished root canal to wait for another day, but I do remember I had never felt such kindness and compassion from any doctor. He did not bill me for a wasted appointment. I went back several weeks later, and he did the root canal, uninterrupted.

Of course, we need to try to say and do the rights things, but if we don’t make others feel our love and compassion, those words may fall on deaf ears, and the deeds may go unnoticed. It is the hug and the compassionate look into hurting eyes they will remember. That, my friends, is our assignment for today.

GOD REQUIRES THAT WE STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 15, 2017

In 2017 history was made in college basketball.  The ladies basketball team from the University of Connecticut won their one hundredth consecutive game. Oddly, they held the previous record of 90 wins but broke their own record on their way to one hundred.  We have to go back to 1974 to find the last streak to get close to U Conn’s amazing record.  This is a record that will stand a long time. What is even more amazing is that the average point spread in those wins is thirty-eight points.  As a college basketball enthusiast, I am amazed at these statistics. There are many sports records but let me focus on a few more long streaks.  Pat Summitt, the former coach of the ladies basketball team of the University of Tennessee, retired in 2012 with 1098 career victories.  She holds that record to date in Division I NCAA basketball (among men and women’s teams.)  If Coach Krzyzewski of the men’s Duke Blue Devils coaches another season, he will likely break Summitt’s record.  Other sports can boast of excellence among players, coaches or managers.  What makes these people and teams more excellent when we all know the general rule of thumb is that on any given day, any team, even the worst team, can beat the best?

As I thought about this today, I recall what I know of these great sports organizations and leaders.  The coaches are known for their integrity and are highly esteemed among their peers.  They push their players to play their best. These teams can accept defeat as long as they know they have given their all. Unfortunately, in many organizations, the new rule is that winning doesn’t matter as long as you have fun.  This philosophy says that everyone gets the same trophy, even if some don’t try at all. I do not believe that is God’s standard.

The point of all this is not so much about sports, although it certainly applies, but about the game of life.  God has expectations from “His team.” I googled scripture passages about excellence.  The one verse that says it best is 1 Thessalonians 4:1, “Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you may excel still more. (New American Standard Bible).

When we walk as God would have us walk, He counts it as excellence.

In all you do today,  do so with excellence as God leads you. We may fail at times. I suspect the Lady Huskies of the University of Connecticut will one day lose a game. As the Apostle Paul says, “run as if to win the race.” We may not win them all, but we must do our best. God expects excellence.

SPREAD THE LOVE ON VALENTINES DAY

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 14, 2017

God is love!  His love is pure and perfect.   In fact, the Bible says God is love. “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” 1 John 4:16.

Of course, we are all about love on Valentines Day.  If you love someone do you keep it to yourself? When you fell in love with your spouse, did you tell anyone?  When your children were born, did you tell anyone how much you loved them? Of course, you did.  You want the world to know.  This point was beautifully illustrated in the children’s sermon at my church on Sunday. The lady that delivered the talk proudly explained to the children that she loved her husband.  But she asked, “If I bought my husband a box of candy for Valentines Day, but ate the whole box before I gave it to him, would he know I love him? The children thought it was funny, but she had made the point.  If we love someone we show it, and we tell others.

If we have the love of God, we can’t hoard it.  It is not meant to be kept for ourselves only. God graciously gives us His unconditional love and He wants us to share it with everyone.

On this Valentines Day, share your love and God’s love today.

ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 12, 2018

Not long ago I was driving a busy, major, four-lane highway a few miles from my home.  It was a clear day, and I was driving the posted speed limit. Suddenly, as if out of nowhere, a car was crossing in front of me from a side road. The vehicle was within feet of my car.  At sixty mph I knew there was no way to avoid hitting the car. It happened so quickly. I never saw it approaching; it was just there.  I could not react. So many thoughts can go through one’s mind in a split second. I knew I did not have time to brake, nor was there time to pray.  I also was aware that at my speed, striking a vehicle broadside would kill the driver of the other car. There was nothing I could do.  There was no possible way to prevent a tragedy.

The next thing I remembered was realizing the car was no longer in front of me.  I had not hit it!  I could not beIeive it. I glanced to my right and noticed the vehicle had already crossed the road and was at least fifty yards away. All I could think was, “that’s impossible!”  It truly was impossible!

I have thought of that day many times.  Ironically I was driving home from church where the choir had just sung, “Nothing is Impossible When You Put Your Trust in God.”  Though I had no time to pray or believe God for a miracle, I know He is a God of His word, and in that Word, I have read many times, ” with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19: 26).

What was going through my mind in that split second was reasoning from a human standpoint, but I knew, what was impossible to prevent in my strength or ability was easily possible with God.

There is nothing you or I face today that is too difficult for God!!

THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HAS MADE

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 11, 2017

I have been a night person all my life.  The night is my most productive time. The most difficult task of my day is getting out of bed in the morning. That is not the case with my dog, Maggie.  She awakes eager to start her day of work. (Catching Frisbees and chasing golf balls or tennis balls.) She has boundless energy in the morning.  When I can barely open my eyes, she is shoving a Frisbee in my face.  Reluctantly, I dress and drag myself outdoors, often in the rain or snow, to play Frisbee or ball.

I think how nice it would be to start my day with such joy and expectation.  I am never awake enough to do my daily devotions in the morning.  At the very least, I should do what Maggie appears to do in her canine kind of way.  In her mind, she must be thinking, “This is a new day to play. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”  Sound a little familiar?  She puts me to shame, because I know the first thought that crosses my mind when I awake should be, “This is the day that the Lord has made.  I will rejoice and be glad in it,” Psalm 118.24. I should say, “Good morning Lord.  What great things do you have planned for me today to advance Your Kingdom on earth?”  Regretfully, most mornings that is not what I am thinking.  I just want to go back to sleep.

However, as I write this, I accept the challenge from my little bundle of morning energy.  I will resolve to approach the day with as much joy and expectation as does she.

I am not sure why I am a night person. A day has 24 hours. I do believe God would have me use my waking hours to seek and serve Him. Whether we are day people or night people, we should rejoice in every moment to serve the God of the universe.

Thank you, Maggie, for reminding me that every day belongs to the Master.  I will rejoice and be glad in each day, even if I only have one eye open!
