DID I SAY THAT?

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 9, 2018

I found one of my old journals yesterday.  The journal begins on January 1, 2007.  The entry on January 6, 2007, really got my attention.  Many of my journal entries are quotes from other sources and I always acknowledge the source. This particular entry was apparently from my own pen because it starts with stating that I was commenting on the previous day’s entry. That previous entry was a quote by William James, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitude.”

This was my response the next day: “I think it is amazing how fear, anxiety, worry, pain, depression, etc., all set into motion forces that feed the problem. It is also amazing how love, warmth, and a smile, etc., set into motion forces that allow us to solve problems we would never be able to solve otherwise. Fear paralyzes us and keeps us from thinking clearly. Negative feeds on negative; positive feeds on positive.  It is hard for one to survive in the presence of the other. Whichever one we exercise the most is the one that will ultimately survive.”

I don’t remember writing it.  I actually ran it through a plagiarism checker to be certain I had not entered it in my journal as something I should have credited to someone else.  It appears to be mine.  I kind of like it and believe it has some words of wisdom, even if they are mine.  I will now stop patting myself on the back and ponder the lesson I should learn from it.

I ATE THE WHOLE THING

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 8, 2018

I am home alone.  We had 6 inches of snow overnight and I am snowbound. What can one do when snowed in on a lonely winter day.  I baked my favorite Pumpkin Pie last night and by the time you read this, I will have eaten the whole thing!! That’s right. I usually have to share, but not this time.  Three things come to mind when I think of what I have done; greed, gluttony, and lack of self-control.

The Bible has something to say about each.  On greed; Luke 12:15, “Watch out!, Be on guard against all kinds of greed.” Gluttony; “Their destiny is destruction, their god is their belly, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.”(Philippians 3:19). Lack of self-control;  “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

I guess I really blew it. I can’t excuse it.  I won’t do it again, (at least not until I am homebound alone and I yield to the temptation). Our problem with sin is not that we slip occasionally, but that we do it so often it becomes a lifestyle and ruins our witness and our fellowship with God. I am not saying we should ever excuse sin, but it does happen because we are products of a fallen world.

I cannot say I feel even the slightest twinge of guilt over my pumpkin pie binge.  I do know, however, when I am out of fellowship with God because of repeated patterns of sinful and harmful behavior. When something is wrong in our human relationships we know it.  So it is with God. I found a statement on the Biblehub.com website.  I would credit the author but none is listed under this article.  The statement says, ” When one becomes a Christian, there is a change in his relationship with sin. Sin is not eliminated in the believer until he comes to glory, but his relationship to sin is changed when he truly becomes a Christian.”  It goes on to say,  “A Christian does not love sin, does not brag about sin, does not plan to sin, does not have fond memories of sin, does not enjoy it, and is not comfortable in habitual sin”.  (From Biblehub.com.)

If we are out of fellowship with God, chances are we have a sin problem and it is not binging on pumpkin pie.  We must repent, ask God for forgiveness and He will restore us to a right relationship with Him.

Now, if you will excuse me, I have one more piece of pumpkin pie to eat.

RATHER THAN A PITY PARTY PRAY FOR THOSE WITH REAL PROBLEMS

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 7, 2018

Yesterday marked what is always the saddest day of the year for me. The Christmas season (which I love) is over and the day my daughter leaves after her visit home for Christmas is the saddest day. She left yesterday and my sadness is palpable. I know I will not see her for months; maybe not until next Christmas.

As I was having my pity party, I thought about our service men and women who leave home for long deployments, not knowing when or if they will return.  I cannot imagine the despondency their loved ones must feel.  I think of millions who live in such poverty they know not from where their next meal will come. I think of the atrocities taking place all over the world and the horror millions of people deal with every day. I  think of children left homeless by the ravages of war. We live in a very fallen world.  If all I have to be sad about is saying goodbye to a daughter I may not see for months but will text and email multiple times a day and talk with several times a week then, I think I will shut down this pity party, get on my knees, thank God for my countless blessings, and pray for those with real problems.

LETTERS, JOURNALS AND OLD VALENTINES

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 7, 2017

One recent morning I went out early.  As it was a bit colder than it has been, I grabbed a coat I had not worn all season. Have you ever reached into a pocket of a garment you have not worn in a long while and found a pleasant surprise?  Most of us have.  I love it when I find money.  Once I found forty dollars that had been in a coat pocket for months. Yesterday, I did not find money, but I found something more precious. In that coat were three small, folded valentine cards.  They were from children at church who had given them to me last year on Valentines Day. I thought of each child. I remember when they gave them to me. They wanted me to know they loved me. After they had given them to me, I put them in my coat pocket and never thought of them again, until today. What a treat it was for me to discover them and remember those children.

Finding those valentines reminds me of the Apostle Paul and the many letters he wrote to the churches he helped establish and to his special friends that ministered alongside him and even spent time in prison with him.  To the church at Philippi, he delivers a beautiful salutation; “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:3-6). The people of Philippi must have read the letter over and over again. His words must have made them feel warm and fuzzy and gave them encouragement to carry on. We are encouraged to this day by his writings to those churches.

We have all received letters, cards or even valentines that we read over and over.  What occurs to me after reading my valentines yesterday and thinking of Paul writing encouraging letters that have been blessings for centuries, is that the written word is incredibly powerful. Many people journal daily and what a treasure that will be to leave for loved ones to enjoy in the future.  My mother-in-law journaled and left her journals to my daughter.  My daughter cherishes them. Generations to follow can learn much from us.

I am not sure how I got from finding three valentines in an old coat to this point, but the challenge is to write something frequently, perhaps daily, to leave your loved ones.  May it be words of encouragement and love and wisdom. We may never know how it touches someone’s life, long after we are gone.

WAITING ON HIS PLAN

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 5, 2017

It is hard to trust in God when things are not going according to your plan. I was talking with a neighbor about how our plans don’t always work out the way we want them too. Have you ever been through a time when nothing went according to your plan, only to look back later and see how God had a better plan for you all along?  My neighbor commented the difficult thing for him is waiting upon the Lord: allowing Him to work His plan for us in His time.  A scripture verse comes to mind; “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11).

What a powerful verse.  If God’s plan is to prosper us, to do us no harm and give us hope for the future, and to do these things in His perfect time, (ref Ecclesiastes 3:11), then we must learn to wait upon the Lord. It has taken most of my life to realize it, but if I do not have peace about something, I wait until I have peace.  When waiting upon the Lord and peace comes, you have the green light to proceed.

HEAVEN WILL BE A BLAST

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 4, 2018

Last night my family entertained friends we have known for nearly forty years. We do not see each other often yet it always amazes me how we can pick up right where we left off.  It is fun to catch up on what is happening in their lives.  We literally sit and talk for hours without missing a beat. I could not help but think I was experiencing a little bit of what heaven must be like.

It is a blessing to have friends that are always with us in Spirit even though we may go for months without visiting one another.  That is what the family of God is all about. We share such a common bond we are never really far apart. I cherish the times we have to see them.

The greatest blessing is knowing that there will come a time when we will be with our special friends and loved ones for all eternity.  Today, thank God for that certainty.  Thank Him for preparing a place where we can reunite and forever pick up where we left off. If last night was a small sample of heaven, I can’t wait to get there. It will be a blast.

DOES YOUR SPIRITUAL HOUSE PASS THE WHITE GLOVE TEST?

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 3, 2017

For several months, my husband and I listed our home for sale with a realty company.  We did not sell the home but it was an impetus for us to keep the house clean should someone want to see the home on short notice.  Once the listing ended, I became lax in my housekeeping.

A couple of months later, our former realtor called to say a colleague of hers wanted to show our home. Even though it was not listed, we knew we could arrange a special contract. I was in a panic. My house was not ready to show to strangers.  It was in late December and after almost two weeks of holiday guests and entertaining, much was out of order, and nothing could pass the white glove test. While I did not sweep dirt under the rug, I am glad the prospective buyers did not look closely behind cabinet doors, closets and under the beds.  I am not above gathering clutter and tossing it into the trunk of a car.  In the end, the house looked great, but closer examination would have revealed a house not well kept.

I  pulled it off.  No one saw the things I did not want them to see. As I thought about this house that looked clean on the outside,  I thought how God knows what my physical house and my spiritual house are like on the outside and the inside.  He knows my thoughts and motives. He knows if they are pure or impure.  I cannot sweep anything under the proverbial rug. Nothing that I do, say or think escapes His white glove test.

I may never be a good housekeeper, and I doubt that God cares much about that, but he does care about the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is my body. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

I belong to God.  He will not allow me to get away with anything that is contrary to His standard. I do not know His standard for my housekeeping, but I do know what His standard is for my life.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION?

YOUR DAILY MOMENT:  Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
January 2, 2017

As music director at my church, I choose the hymns and praise and worship songs for the services.  As always on the first Sunday of the New Year, I chose the beautiful hymn, “Be Thou My Vision.”  I can’t think of a better resolution for the coming year than to resolve to see the world through the eyes of God. To do that we must focus our attention on Him. He becomes our vision and His vision can then be made manifest in us.

God’s vision for the world is what His vision was in the Garden of Eden; a perfect world where all His creation could enjoy fellowship with Him.  Man chose sin over obedience and therefore separation from God.  His vision is still the same.  He wants us restored to full fellowship.  Through Christ that is possible.

May each of us share God’s vision for the world throughout the New Year.

WHAT NOW?

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin  your day
January 1, 2018

We have rung out the old year and in the new. What now? It is a rhetorical question and the answer lies within each of us.

At this writing, most of the news around the world is a horror show.   Almost weekly there is a terrorist attack somewhere in the world. There remains the threat of nuclear proliferation. It seems as though evil has overtaken good in the world. Will the next year be more of the same or better?  Only God knows.

As I have thought about that question, it occurs to me that I do not have control over what happens in most of the world.  I can, however, exercise some control over my own little world: my neighborhood, my town, my family. Peace in the world begins with one peacemaker at a time.  We may never know how our actions right here, where we are, may somehow spread to another part of the world. I can’t help but think of the song, “Let There Be Peace on Earth and Let It Begin With Me.” (Jill Jackson-Miller and Sy Miller, 1955).

Make a point each day in the New Year to spread a little peace, spread a little love and share God’s best with everyone. Happy New Year!

FORGET WHAT IS PAST, PRESS ON TO WHAT LIES AHEAD

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
December 31, 2017

Here we are on the last day of the year.  While most of us are busy making our last minute plans on how we will welcome in the New Year, perhaps we should take a few moments today to reflect on the past year.

I honestly cannot remember what my resolutions were when the year began. That likely means I did not keep them. There were things I did well and things not so well.  All that really matters is how God will view how well I served Him and advanced His Kingdom on earth.  We can’t take any of those days back.  The only thing we can do now is what the Apostle Paul did.  “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14.

No, we cannot resurrect the past, but we can lay the foundation for a better year ahead as we press on to win the prize.
