IT’S BEGINNING TO FEEL A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
December 3, 2017

My house is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.  I have worked on the tree for five days.  It is about 3/4 complete. My lovely Christmas village is complete and the exterior decorations are finished. Yes, it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, but does it feel a lot like Christmas? I have to admit, it doesn’t.  I have been so busy with decorating, and shopping, and baking, and cleaning, that I have not had much time to think about what the true meaning of Christmas.  It seems that is the case every year. I understand non-Christians being caught up in the secular side of Christmas, but for Christians, it is shameful when we leave Christ out of our Christmas.

Christmas begins when Jesus invades our hearts.  Our hearts will then manifest His presence in our lives.  We will feel it and we will show it to the world. This should be true every day of the year, but especially at Christmas, when we are making so much effort to recognize His birth.

My challenge to all my readers is to not only make your home look like Christmas, but feel like Christmas. It must begin in the hearts of those who believe.

I THANK MY GOD IN ALL MY REMEMBRANCE OF YOU

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
December 2, 2017

I have been decorating the Christmas tree for the past couple of days. It is a chore, but I love it.  What is so most precious is the hanging of ornaments that have been gifts from special friends over the years.  It brings back beautiful memories. Most remind me of someone who is still in my life and some conjure memories of someone who is no longer with me.   In either case, it is lovely to remember the good times we have had. We have shared laughter and tears.

I thought of a scripture verse as I was hanging ornaments from dear friends. “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you.” Philippians 1:3.  Each one of these special people contributed a thread that is forever woven into the fabric of my life.   Because of them, my life has more meaning and purpose. I do thank my God for each of them.

If you have a God ordained friend, you are blessed.  Call that friend today and tell him or her how thankful you are God has given you this special gift of friendship. Make that friends day by saying, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you.”  I dare you!  It will make your day too.

HE STILL SPEAKS AND HE STILL COMES

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
November 30, 2017

My church choir has been working long and hard on our Christmas cantata.  This year we are doing a work created and arranged by Tom Fettke, and orchestrated by Russell Mauldin.  If you work with church music, you will surely recognize these names.

One of the songs,”The Miracle of Christmas,”* in this beautiful collection has words that speak to me. “And the God who spoke is speaking still, and the God who came still comes.” I have been singing it all day and have been thinking about the meaning of those lovely, poetic words. Very simply it means, Christmas is not just an event that happened over two thousand years ago. Christmas is still happening today because the God who spoke two thousand years ago still speaks and the God who came two thousand years ago, still comes to the hearts of those who believe and receive the Lord Jesus.

This season, allow Him to speak and come into your life as never before.  Jesus is the Miracle of Christmas. This event we celebrate was a miracle two thousand years ago and receiving Him still produces miracles today.

* The Miracle of Christmas,” taken from Majesty of Heaven, created and arranged by Tom Fettke, orchestrated by Russell Mauldin, and published by Gaither Music Company, Praise Gathering Music Group and LifeWay Worship.

I’M SO GLAD I’M A PART OF THE FAMILY OF GOD

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
November 29, 2017

Recently, I spoke with a cousin I have not seen or talked to for well over 50 years.  We are about the same age, but he grew up in a city about a four-hour drive from where I lived.  Over the years I completely lost touch.  It was only recently I learned that he lived just outside of Santa Fe, NM. My daughter, Molly, moved to Santa Fe a few months ago. Thankfully my brother has always stayed in touch with family much better than I, and he called this cousin to tell him Molly lived nearby.  My cousin contacted Molly, and she had a delightful visit with him and his wife. They are all thrilled to have family nearby.

How nice it is to reunite with family. I realized this after we had talked for awhile. With family, you can pick up where you left off, even if fifty years later.

I could not help but think of the Family of God. It is very much the same way when you meet another Christian and immediately have that sense of family.  The God of the universe has given us brothers and sisters for all eternity.

As you think of your blood family this holiday season, also remember how blessed you are to be a part of the family of God. Your brothers and sisters in Christ are blood family; we become a part of this family because of the blood of Christ. Enjoy both families this season.

LET IT GO!

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
November 28,2017

I have a border collie.  Like most border collies she is focused, intense, a little eccentric and has OCD (obsessive, compulsive disorder ). She is obsessed with play; especially frisbee.  Whenever I go out to play frisbee with her, I always take more than one.  I usually take seven.  I have to take more than one because she catches the frisbee I throw and returns it to me, but will not let it go so that she can enjoy running and catching other frisbees. If I have another frisbee in my hand she will let go of the one so that she can be ready for the next one I am holding.  She has seven because I don’t have to bend over as often. She never tires; I do! As I was playing with her this morning, I reached to take the one out of her mouth.  As usual, she would not let it go. While I was reaching for another I said to her, “let it go.”  Not until I had another in hand to throw did she give in and drop the first one. Then she happily darted out to continue her favorite game.

As I was playing with her it occurred to me that often us humans hang on to things we need to let go. It is not a perfect analogy.  Most of us have something we have to let go before we can fully enjoy the abundant life God wants us to have.  It may be a grudge, a painful past, an unforgiving spirit, or any number of other things that hold us back.  God wants us to let those things go!  Our minds and hearts need to be uncluttered so that He can fill them with His love and forgiveness. We are then free to pick up the new life without the baggage.

Today, if you are holding on to something you need to let go, let it go immediately and begin to enjoy all God has for you.

HOW DO YOU PUT CHRIST BACK INTO CHRISTMAS?

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
November 27, 2017

Thanksgiving has passed.  I love the time from Thanksgiving through Christmas. I usually start the Christmas music in mid-November and the decorations start going up the day after Thanksgiving. I am running a few days late this year, but I will begin in a couple of days. I see many homes in town decorated, and downtown is ready for the Christmas parade.

When I was a child, we decorated on Christmas Eve, and the tree was out the door the next day. I am sure we did not see Christmas commercials in September.

Every year Christians lament that we have commercialized Christmas too much. It is true, for many, if not most, Christmas is all about the presents under the tree and not the baby in the manger.

Most of us Christians think we know what Christmas is all about. It occurs to me, however, that we can’t put Christ back into Christmas by singing more Baby Jesus carols instead of the likes of Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman.  We can’t put Christ back into Christmas by having  a manger scene somewhere in our house or yard. It does not happen by sending Christmas cards bearing a scene of Jesus in the manger  or a verse about “peace on earth goodwill to men,” instead of cards with Santa Clause and his team of reindeer. Putting Christ back into Christmas does not happen by reading the Christmas story before we open our presents. We put Christ back into Christmas when, every day of the season, we advance His Kingdom on earth by sharing why he was born.  He was born to die for the sins of all mankind so that, “…in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Yes, just spreading the simple gospel message is the best way to put Christ back into Christmas.

STAND UP TO SATAN AND WATCH THE DELIVERANCE OF THE LORD

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
November 26, 2017

As we gathered on Thanksgiving for our traditional family meal, my brother-in-law, Cabel, spoke in our prayer circle about the day his son Joshua was born.  Josh had been born with a condition known as Respiratory Distress Syndrome.  I won’t go into detail about the condition ( because I don’t know much about it ) but apparently, Josh’s case was very serious and his survival was in question. Rather than breathing normally, Josh was grunting; struggling to breathe. Cabel’s wife was still in recovery following a Caesarean section and was not aware of the problem.  Cabel asked the doctor if he could go to the nursery and see his newborn son.  The doctors agreed to give him a moment. Cabel could not hold him and he was not really sure if he could safely touch him.  Cabel held one of Josh’s toes and began to pray.  He told Satan that he could not have his son. Josh was a gift from God and Satan had to keep his hands off. He claimed a healing for Josh in the name of Jesus and committed him to God.  When he opened his eyes, Josh was breathing normally.  Cabel left and the doctor went in.  A few moments later, the doctor walked out of the nursery, puzzled, but stating Josh’s breathing was normal.  Respiratory Distress Syndrome was no longer a problem.

From what little I have read about the condition, it does not go away immediately.  There are treatments, but again, this was a serious case and it would not go away on its own unless the God of the Universe intervened: and He did.  Today, Josh is married with three children and a successful career.  He is a Christian and loves the Lord.

Until yesterday I had never known how close we came to not having Josh and his family with us. I am thankful for a father who stood up to Satan, claimed his son for God, and then stood back and watched the deliverance of the Lord.

Yes, we do have much for which to be thankful; not the least of which is life itself.

LET YOUR LAST WORDS BE, I LOVE YOU

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
November 25, 2017

We recently lost a precious friend.  She was a lovely lady who loved the Lord and her family with all her heart.  Though she had been in failing health for a long time, she died quite suddenly. As I thought about her family, several things came to mind that I felt God wanted me to say to them.

1.  I know your pain is intensified because we are going into the holiday season. You will miss your loved one as you remember the many happy Thanksgivings and Christmases together.  This year, there will be an empty place at the table and around the tree.

2.  Often people lament not having had a chance to say a proper goodbye. Your loved one died suddenly and was alone. You may feel you did not have a chance to say goodbye.

3.  You never left one another without saying, “I love you.” You, therefore,  will never lament that you had not a proper goodbye.  Anytime the last words you say to a loved one are those three words,  “I love you,” you never need to say anything more. Never will you have the regrets that many others have who have left things unsaid, or have said things that should not have been said.

I know this family will grieve and mourn, which is healthy.  I am happy they are satisfied they had a proper goodbye.

It reminds me, and I hope each of you reading this, that the last words our loved ones should hear from us are, “I love you.”

JESUS, JESUS, LORD OF LOST AND FOUND

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
November 24, 2017

Have you ever lost something and looked and looked everywhere and finally just said, “Lord help me find it,”  and after speaking that prayer, you were able to locate the item immediately!! That has happened so many times to me it finally has occurred to me to pray first!

My husband has started using a little rhyme to pray for God’s lost and found department to help. It goes like this; “Jesus, Jesus, Lord of lost and found, make this missing ( name lost object ) come around.”  It happened twice to him yesterday, and he was able to locate the items almost immediately.

Whenever this happens, I am always reminded that our God cares about the big and small problems in our lives.  We often think we can’t bother God with a request unless it is a life or death matter. The fact is, God is big enough to take care of finding your lost keys or healing your sick body, at the same time!! He multitasks very well.  Praying for the small things may give us more confidence to pray for the big things.

THANK HIM FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE AND WORSHIP HIM FOR WHO HE IS

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
November 23, 2017

Every year during the Thanksgiving season I try to think of a way to send the typical Thanksgiving wishes but do not want it to sound canned. Everyone says, “We have much for which to be thankful.” I am sure we mean it because it is true.  We live in a land of bounty and God has showered us with more blessings than we can count.  At Thanksgiving, there is always a service or a time of sharing where we are asked to tell others about those blessings for which we are thankful.  That is a good thing to do.

There is, however, always something that bothers me a little about thanking God for what he has done for us. Don’t misunderstand.  We definitely should be thankful.  I think we need to take it a step further. Have you ever stopped to think that, outside of anything he has ever done for us or ever will do, He is still worthy of our thanks because of Who He is?  He is a righteous, Holy God who allows us to share His Kingdom, His power, and His Glory. If He never again does anything for us, we must still thank Him.   We are allowed every day to fellowship with the God of the universe. That alone is enough for which to be thankful.

Yes, this season and all the time thank Him for what He has done but especially for Who He is.
