WHY TROUBLE YOURSELF WITH GOD’S BATTLES

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 10, 2017

Stonewall Jackson was a man of deep faith.  Those in battle with him marveled at how brave he remained in the fiercest of battles. In response to them,  he said,“My religious beliefs teach me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time of my death. I do not concern myself with that, but to be always ready whenever it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and all men would be equally brave.”

I am not certain I could be as calm in the midst of battle, but it would be a worthy goal. Does it mean we should be careless?  No, but it does suggest that we trust God is in control.  Our battles are not the same as the ones Stonewall Jackson faced, but the message is the same. As God told King Jehosaphat, and in much the same way told Stonewall Jackson, he is telling us, “the battle is not yours but Gods.” (2 Chronicles 20:15). When we know the battle is not ours but the Lords, “all men will be equally brave.”

ARE YOU SLEEP WALKING PAST THE NEEDS OF OTHERS

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 9, 2018

A few days ago something reminded me of my daughter when she was about ten years old. She was a notorious sleepwalker.  One night, she got out of bed, took a shower and washed her hair.  She wrapped herself in a towel and then came to my room, woke me and stood there, dripping wet, talking nonsensically for several minutes. She then wandered back to bed without ever waking.

As I thought about that incident, I laughed.  Quickly, my laughter turned to more serious thought as I realized how many of us, myself included, sleepwalk through life totally oblivious to the needs around us.

This is a common theme in my devotions, so at the risk of being redundant or of “beating a dead horse,” I broach the subject again. As I said, I am guilty of sleepwalking past the needs of others.  I don’t do that deliberately, but the result is the same, deliberate or not. The point is, I must consciously, as an act of my will do what God has called me to do.  When I am in a position to minister or serve, I must do it.  There are many ways I can be pro-active.  I do not have to wait for a need to knock on my door.  I can open my church bulletin and look at the list of shut-ins.  Many of those people have no one to call them or visit them.  There is no reason I should sleepwalk past that need. There is a hospital less than one-half mile from my home.  Again, there is another opportunity for me to share the love of Christ.

I know people who spend their lives serving others.  They don’t sleepwalk, but I am certain they sleep well.

Resolve with me today to consciously reach out to those in need.

BE STILL AND KNOW

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 8, 2018

My daily blog is often inspired by a song.  That is the case today. Reuben Morgan with Hillsong music composed the worship song, “Still.” It has been a favorite of mine for some years. The message of the song is that when our lives are in turmoil, and life’s storms are determined to destroy us, we need to be still.

The message is based on Psalm 46.  Read these familiar verses;“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in time of trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though the waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” (Psalm 46: 1-3).

These verses use the imagery of how bad storms can get. So are the storms of our lives.  We should be emboldened by the fact that God is our refuge and strength and that He is always with us in trouble. What comforting words.  That, however, is difficult to grasp when we are in the midst of the storm. Reading on a few verses, we find how we come to grips with it all.  He says, “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10a). There are two operative words here. The first is still.  When we are so busy trying to solve our problems we can’t be still.  We are fretting and worrying and looking for answers in the wrong places.  We must learn to be “still.” A similar scripture is, “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.” (Isaiah 40:31 King James Version). It is clear we are to be still and/or wait on God.

The other operative word is, “know.” The scripture does not say, “be still and think that I am God,” nor does it say “be still and hope that I am God.”  We must be still and “know” that He is God.” There is no storm He can’t calm.

Practice today being still.  Find comfort, peace and rest in the knowledge that He is God.

THE TOUCH OF THE MASTER’S HAND

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 7, 2017

One of my favorite Christian songs is “The Touch of the Master’s Hand,” recorded by Wayne Watson in 1980. The song was written by John Kramp in 1974 after being inspired by a poem by the same title, written by Myra Brooks Welch in 1921.  Miss Welch wrote it after being inspired by a speaker addressing a group of students.  It is amazing how God used several generations to get this powerful Christian song into the homes of millions of people.

For copyright reasons, I won’t include the words of this song here. Instead, I will summarize the story. There is a link at the end of this post to buy the Wayne Watson album, “How Time Flies,” including this song.  The story is about an auction.  It was late in the day, and there was one more item to sell. It was an old, dusty violin.  No one was interested in this relic.  The auctioneer was about to stop the process when an old man walked up, picked up the bow, tuned the old instrument and began to play. The music was so beautiful the crowd could not believe the sounds that emanated from the violin. Suddenly everyone was bidding. No one could understand the difference from just moments before when the auctioneer could not get one bid.  He simply told them, “it was the touch of the master’s hand.” The song finishes by explaining the analogy of the story of the old violin and the changes that take place when touched by the “Master’s hand.”

There is a challenge for you today.  Think of the story and the analogy. What change has the touch of the Master’s hand-made in your life?  What changes does he still need to make? Each of us is a work in progress and each day of our lives we need a fresh touch from the Master.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND WINNING PEOPLE TO CHRIST

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 6, 2018

Last night at my church we had a soup-er bowl party.  There were at least a half-dozen delicious soups and desserts. We had fellowship around the tables for about an hour and then enjoyed watching the Super Bowl.   There was a healthy rivalry but all in good fun. It was not our typical Sunday evening service. The best thing about the event is that is was not about food or football.  It was about outreach to the community and developing relationships with the visitors that attended.

It reminds me that sometimes we need to think out of the box.  We can go knocking on doors from now until Jesus comes, but, as in this case, inviting people to a night of fun and fellowship is all it takes to establish a bond.

In everyday life, it is much the same way.   We win more people to Christ by developing relationships, day by day with those where we work, shop, or do business or pleasure. When those with whom we interact daily see that we care about them, the relationship begins, and the door opens for us to share Christ.

I wonder how many opportunities I pass up every week to share the love of God with someone I see daily or weekly.  How often could I give a caring touch, share a scripture, say a prayer, or softly breathe the name of Jesus?

We win people to Christ one person and one relationship at a time. Wherever you find yourself today,  look for opportunities to befriend others and begin, what could be, a most important relationship that may lead someone to Christ.

IN THE FAMILY OF GOD, NO BELIEVER IS A STRANGER

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 5, 2018

Would you entertain an overnight guest in your home, whom you have never met before and about whom you know nothing? Your first response might be, “no I wouldn’t.” Well, that is exactly what my husband and I did last night; we hosted someone we had never met.  Why would we do that? The simple answer is that even though we do not know him, we know Who he knows; we have a mutual friend, Jesus.  Our guest is actually a member of the family; the family of God.

We had been asked by my husband’s pastor to host a friend of his whom he had served with on a mission trip to Chile. The team of missionaries was having a reunion in our town and the pastor was asking fellow Christians to host a member of the team.  There was never a question about would we or should we. The Apostle Paul often told the churches of his day to welcome fellow believers.

One thing I have always noticed when meeting another Christian is that you are never at a loss for a subject about which to talk.  It is like sitting down with an old friend or with a family member.

We all hopefully have Christian friends and we all likely have non-Christian friends. I thoroughly enjoy my time with each. There is, however, a special bond with a Christian friend. When I am hurting, or depressed, or despondent, I want the counsel of my Christian friends.  Similarly, when I have great joy about something, I want to share it first with my Christian friends. It is not that my other friends don’t care as much, but Christian cohorts draw upon a strength that secular friends don’t have.

Today, thank God for giving you Godly friends. Thank Him for the love, support and strength you gain from them.

As members of the Family of God, no believer is a stranger.  We praise God for sending our new friend and brother, Charlie.  We have enjoyed the fellowship with him. We will spend eternity together.

NEED AN ATTITUDE CHECK?

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 4, 2018

Several weeks ago I urged my readers to accept the Philippian’s challenge. Those who accepted, hopefully, have read the entire book of Philippians out loud morning and night.  It is an amazing letter from the Apostle Paul to the church at Philippi.

Each reading, when I get to chapter 2: 14-16, I have to pause and do an attitude check. “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation in which you shine like stars in the universe.” How many of us can say we do everything without grumbling or arguing?  I am afraid I can’t say that I do.

If we are always complaining, Paul suggests that it hurts our witness.  Who sees our arguing and grumbling?  The world does, and the world forms an opinion of us.  We are to be seen as blameless and pure, faultless, children of God who stand out as light in a world of darkness. If the world always sees us grumbling, complaining, arguing, or pouting, we won’t be very attractive to a depraved world that badly needs to know Jesus.

If you did not accept the Philippian’s challenge then consider this one. Read these three verses daily, morning and night. After several days you will know them by memory.  When we hear it and say it enough, it will become a part of us.  We will be happier. Those around us will be happier, and the world in need of Jesus will better see Him in us.

TRYING TO FILL YOUR DADDY’S SHOES

YOUR DAILY MOMENT; Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 3, 2018

A few days ago, I was looking through some old photos of our daughter. When she was little, she loved shoes: anyone’s shoes. There was one picture of her wearing her daddy’s shoes.   You can imagine a three-year-old girl in a size fourteen man’s shoe!  As much as she adored her father, there was no way she would ever be able to wear those shoes.

We often speak figuratively about filling someone else’s shoes.  It means we admire someone so much we want to embrace that person’s ideals. We strive to live in such as way as to please that one we admire.

God would have us try to fill His shoes!  He wants us to embrace Who He is and try to live in such a way as to bring honor to Him. We will stumble, just as my daughter stumbled trying to walk around in her daddy’s shoes. God knows we won’t always live up to His expectations, but He is a loving and forgiving Father Who asks us to follow, as best we can, in His steps. The more we seek to live a Holy and Consecrated life, the closer we will come to filling His shoesWe will never achieve that, but isn’t it a lofty goal?

Today, strive to live in such a way as to try to fill our Father’s shoes and bring glory to Him.

WONDER OF WONDERS

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 2, 2018

As I sit at my computer to write today’s devotion I am aware that I have not a clue why this computer works.  I just know that it does.  I will never understand how I can go on the internet and in seconds, get information on any topic I choose. Think back over the past two hundred years and the wonders we have witnessed.  First, the industrial revolution brought changes to how we manufacture.  The Railroad carried the revolution from coast to coast. After the railroad came the combustion engine which created an industry that changed personal transportation with millions of vehicles. I will never understand how trains and cars work, but I know they do.  Then came the airplane. I will never understand how a Boeing 787 Dreamliner weighing over 1/2 million pounds can get the necessary thrust from twin engines and a long wingspan so that it can fly. I just know that it does. It is true, “necessity is the mother of invention,” and God has enabled us to create these wonders.

Of all the wonders we have seen in our lives alone, none compares to the wonder that was here from the beginning of time. It is greater than any of the inventions we have ever witnessed.  It is the wonder that God could care for you and me so much, that He gave His only Son to take on our sin so that we might be saved.  “For God made Him who knew no sin, to become sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” ( 2 Corinthians 5:21). I don’t understand how He could love us so much that He would do that. I don’t have to understand it; I just know that He does.

Today, as you enjoy the wonders of technology, take time to enjoy the greatest wonder of all.  Thank God that he loves us so much that He, from the beginning of time, had a plan whereby we could fellowship with Him for all eternity.  That is the wonder of wonders!

WORSHIP DOES CHANGE EVERYTHING

YOUR DAILY MOMENT: Inspirational thoughts to begin your day
February 1, 2018

Writing a devotion every day can be challenging.  I work very hard to bring a meaningful message to you daily.  Soon after beginning this project I realized I how important it is to be aware of every detail of my day, as some of those details could have spiritual analogies I could use in my posts. I find myself taking notes when I see or think of something that could have a hidden meaning. Several days ago I was so happy to see that Darlene Zschech has a book about worship. She is renowned worldwide as a singer, songwriter, author, and worship leader. Perhaps, she is best known for her affiliation with the Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia. She now co-pastors with her husband the Hope Unlimited Church in South Wales, Australia.

As I have, for many years, been a devotee of Darlene Zschech, I ordered the book immediately. I knew this book, “Worship Changes Everything, Experiencing God’s Presence in Every Moment of Life,”  would offer advice on how to see God working in every detail, every day, (just what I am trying to do.)  She and I share a passion for worship and I could not wait to get into it.  Darlene understands the essence of worship more than anyone I have ever witnessed. Sure enough, I did not get through page one of the introduction before I found something profound.  I take this paragraph from her book and share with you, hoping you, too, will develop a passion for true worship.

“God’s presence defines us; we need more of Him. If you can casually meander through worship, then I would dare to say that maybe, just maybe, you have not entered into true worship at all. We need Jesus-centered, Holy Spirit-filled, passionately led worship.  Because when God comes close, everything changes.” (Darlene Zscheck, “Worship Changes Everything. Experiencing God’s Presence in Every Moment of Life.” Bethany House, 2017.

I need not add anything to that statement, except that I suspect most “worshipers” never actually enter into true worship. We can never leave His presence unchanged.  If you are not changed, you have not worshiped.
